This week’s release list features a double dose of 007.
Few titles have left as big a mark on the gaming landscape as GoldenEye 007 did on the Nintendo 64. For those unfamiliar with its history, GoldenEye was the first first-person shooter to work well on a console, and it set the FPS standards for many years to come. For over a decade, fans have been pleading for a remake of the classic game, and at this year’s Nintendo press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, their prayers were finally answered.
Although it’s not a straight port of the old game, GoldenEye 007 features many familiar elements that are sure to get the nostalgic juices flowing. Keep in mind that several new features have also been added that are intended to keep it up to modern standards. One such feature is the inclusion of a levelling-up system in multiplayer, while others are more subtle, like swapping Bond’s watch for a mobile phone and modernising the firearms roster. While the core story remains the same, Daniel Craig’s likeness is now used as Bond, and his actions have been modified in-game to reflect the grittier style of character that Craig plays. GoldenEye 007 comes out on the Wii and DS on Wednesday around Australia. Those who pick up the special-edition version of the game on the Wii will find a gold-coloured Classic Controller Pro in the box as well.
There’s a second Bond game coming out this week, but this time it’s for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Again starring Daniel Craig as 007, James Bond 007: Blood Stone sees players travelling the world looking for stolen biological weapons. Developed by Bizarre Creations of Blur and Project Gotham fame, Blood Stone marks the second game made by the studio since being acquired by Activision. James Bond 007: Blood Stone will also be released on Wednesday.
If you’re after a game that doesn’t star a smooth-talking Englishman, then the team over at Ready at Dawn has the game for you. God of War: Ghost of Sparta is Kratos’ second outing on the PSP and tells his story during his early days as the newly made god of war. No hardware bundles have been announced for God of War: Ghost of Sparta, so you will be able to pick this one up only as a stand-alone when it’s released.
