Motion-controlled Xbox Live social hub Avatar Kinect launches on 27th July, according to Microsoft insiders.
WinRumours’ sources claim that the service will be made available for free as part of the Fun Labs set-up announced at E3 last month.
First announced at CES back in January, Avatar Kinect lets you shoot the breeze with your friends’ avatars in one of 15 different virtual settings.

Former Halo Wars devs’ latest due soon.
Orcs Must Die!, a tower defense game from Robot Entertainment, invades PC and Xbox Live Arcade later this summer.
Published by Microsoft Game Studios, it tasks you with protecting your fortress from an army of monsters by any means possible.
While the prospect of yet another tower defense title might not set pulses racing, it at least has pedigree. Robot rose from the ashes of Halo Wars and Age of Empires developer Ensemble.

Half the price of Xbox 360 version.
Ravey motion-controlled shooter Child of Eden will sell for £19.99 when it launches on PlayStation 3 later this year half the price of the recent Xbox 360 version.
Further to that, Amazon and Play have already knocked a further five quid off that price, offering it for £14.99.
The Tetsuya Mizuguchi-developed effort launched at full price on Xbox 360 earlier this month but has struggled at retail. It entered the UK charts at 25th in its debut week, and only sold 34,000 in the US in its first month.

But F2P means new dawn for series.
The lack of dedicated PC Ghost Recon titles was a result of the sorry state of the retail market for the platform, Ubisoft has explained.
Theo Sanders, creative director of the forthcoming Ghost Recon Online, told CVG that all PC releases in the series were ported down from the console versions.
“We knew it was a platform we wanted to come back to. However, until recently, the retail market for PC made it difficult to invest in a big, dedicated product,” he explained.

Juarez! Insect Armageddon! PS3 Double Packs!
This week sees gaming’s first Western since last year’s epic Red Dead Redemption. Can Call of Juarez: The Cartel compete? The third entry in Techland’s cowboy series is taking a very bold tack – uprooting the shooting from the genre’s classic timeframe and dumping gamers in the modern day.
Remember the bit in Honey I Shrunk the Kids where the miniaturised children find the huge ant? Well, imagine a whole army of giant pincer-gnashing Antie lookalikes who are pure evil, and that’s Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon.
With summer apparently in full swing, Microsoft has again sounded the call for gamers to begin their annual pilgrimage to Xbox Live. Xbox owners who make the trek to their console’s Marketplace are rewarded with a weekly oasis of gaming gems to quench their thirst from the retail release summer drought.

Developer justifies Tomb Raider reboot.
Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics decided to reboot the Tomb Raider franchise because heroine Lara Croft was starting to lose relevance, so says brand director Karl Stewart.
In a Rock Paper Shotgun interview, Stewart argued that gamers were struggling to relate to the invincible, infallible old Lara. Conversely, the revised take on the gaming icon will be more more grounded and accessible.
“I think Lara’s a beloved character and Crystal has really enjoyed their time they’ve been able to spend with her,” explained Stewart.

Publisher’s latest expansion to bring 300 new jobs to Texas capital; pro-industry efforts of Governor Rick Perry a factor.
EA Sports is getting an expansion team, as the Austin-American Statesman reports that Electronic Arts has committed to opening up a new studio deep in the heart of Texas. The Austin-based studio is expected to add 300 jobs to the publisher’s presence in the Texas capital, joining fellow EA shop BioWare Austin.
About half of the new jobs are expected to be full-time positions, with the remainder being contract work. EA has also already started the hiring process, although it’s not clear when the studio is expected to be fully staffed.
An official announcement about the studio is expected to be made later today with Texas Governor Rick Perry. The governor, who has been speculated as making a run for the 2012 Republican nomination for president, has advocated tax incentives for game publishers for years.
In a keynote address at the 2008 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Perry pitched developers on bringing their business to the Lone Star State. Earlier this year, he also pushed the Texas legislature to preserve the state’s Emerging Technology Fund, which has provided hundreds of millions of dollars to companies developing and commercializing new technologies.
EA Games president Frank Gibeau told the paper that Perry’s efforts were a factor in the publisher’s decision to set up shop in Austin, along with the local talent base and the state’s business-friendly climate. He also declined to specify which projects the studio would be put to work on first.
