Multiplayer test period for Naughty Dog’s next adventure draws 1.53 million players averaging more than 1,200 kills each.
Sony pulled the plug on the Uncharted 3 multiplayer beta today, and set about tallying up the data collected since it launched late last month. According to the PS3 maker, the beta was the largest test period the system has ever seen, with 1.53 million players involved.
In 362 cumulative years of match time, Uncharted 3 beta testers fired 48 billion shots, killing each other a total of 1.9 billion times, which works out to an average of 1,200 kills per player. Sony tossed out a couple more stats, saying testers completed 22 million matches, racking up $1.9 trillion in in-game cash.
When it arrives on November 1, Uncharted 3 will focus on protagonist Drake’s search for a lost city, with the wily adventurer finding his way to the Arabian Peninsula and its bleak Empty Quarter. In addition to the new multiplayer overhauls, the game will feature stereoscopic 3D capability, new stealth and melee maneuvers, and more. The game will debut alongside the first novel based on the series, Uncharted: The Fourth Labyrinth.

Argues it’s “superior” to Nintendo, Sony.
The Xbox 360’s first party output has been superior to Nintendo and Sony’s efforts on their consoles, so says a top Microsoft exec.
When IndustryGamers suggested that Microsoft might need to invest in more studios to better compete with its two competitors, Xbox CFO Dennis Durkin argued that it is in fact pacing ahead of both Nintendo and Sony.
“I would ask you to go and look at some of your data,” he explained, “just to compare first party performance over the course of this lifecycle, because I think our first party performance in terms of quality bars and units per title this shift has been superior to our competition’s.”

Too Human studio receives grant to nearly double studio size with the addition of 80 new jobs.
The Canadian government is generous with its tax subsidies and grants for the game industry, and a welcome recipient has been St. Catherine’s, Ontario-based Silicon Knights. This week, Ontario’s Ministry of Economic Development and Trade announced that the Too Human developer has been granted funds to dramatically expand its operations with the creation of 80 new jobs.
The Ontario ministry did not expound on the particulars of its grant to Silicon Knights. However, it did note that in addition to creating the new jobs, the money would help “protect 97 existing positions” at the studio.
Led by polemic game creator Dennis Dyack, Silicon Knights is known for its work on Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. After working exclusively with Nintendo during the late ’90s and early 2000s, Silicon Knights signed on with Microsoft Studios to create the Too Human trilogy for the Xbox 360.
Silicon Knights is currently working with Activision to release X-Men: Destiny for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, and DS this fall. The studio has also expressed interest in returning to the Too Human trilogy, despite the first game’s lackluster critical and commercial reception. Additionally, as part of a separate Canadian grant from 2009, the studio said that it was at work on a project titled “Siren in the Maelstrom.”
