Shinji Mikami walks away from PlatinumGames with a revelation – originally, Vanquish was a very different game.
In the beginning, hero Sam’s suit was empty. He was a robot. And he was controlled remotely by a trio of uniquely skilled operators.
“In our original vision for Vanquish, no one was actually inside Sam’s suit. Instead, it was a remotely operated robot with three different pilots who would take turns controlling the unit from afar,” Vanquish director Mikami revealed on the PlatinumGames blog.

Filmmaker’s video game project with THQ and Volition to be a three-part franchise; first due out in 2013.
At the 2010 Video Game Awards on Saturday, Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy director Guillermo Del Toro officially popped open the lid on inSane, his video game project with THQ and Red Faction developer Volition. Now, new details on the project have crept out.
Today THQ announced that Insane would not be one game, but three. The first entry in the trilogy is due out in 2013, with the ensuing two following at to-be-determined dates in the future. A brief trailer (embedded below) was shown this weekend at the awards show, but concrete details remain scant surrounding the title. Del Toro did, however, offer a teasing statement as to what fans can expect from Insane.
“With this new series of video games, I want to take players to a place they have never seen before, where every single action makes them question their own senses of morality and reality,” he said.
Del Toro will serve as creative director on the project–rumored to be a Lovecraftian action role-playing game–and will work alongside THQ and Volition through the game’s development. Further, Del Toro will also be part of the team responsible for transmedia properties surrounding Insane.
The rights to Insane’s three titles will be held by THQ, and Del Toro will own the rights to “any filmed entertainment products.” Specific release platforms for Insane have not been expressly noted yet. However, the game’s website displays logos for the PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and Del Toro’s Double Dare You animation studio.

Fastest-grossing App ever?
Is Epic’s iOS debut Infinity Blade the fastest-grossing App ever? With sales totalling $1.64 million in just over four days, it may well be.
Since launch the Unreal Engine-powered Infinity Blade has been downloaded 274,768 times, Apple’s Game Center reveals. It costs $5.99.
The previous record for fastest-grossing App was held by Cut The Rope, which turned over $1 million in its first 10 days. However, the $0.99 title also boasted one million downloads over the same period.

Blizzard does a Deathwing on record books.
The third World of Warcraft expansion, Cataclysm, is the world’s fastest-selling PC game.
In 24 hours Cataclysm sold 3.3 million copies worldwide, on Mac and PC.
Compare that to the world’s fastest selling multi-platform game Call of Duty: Black Ops, which sold 5.7 million copies in 24 hours, and Blizzard’s achievement speaks for itself.

Questions “ramming product at people”.
As the battle for motion-sensing supremacy heats up this Christmas, Sony has cast doubt on the wisdom of Microsoft’s blockbuster Kinect launch.

Platforms named.
The technology powering next year’s sure to be gargantuan fantasy role-playing game Elder Scrolls V has taken developer Bethesda “many years” to create, it revealed today.
However, Bethesda failed to clarify exactly which engine is being used to build the game.
Over the weekend Bethesda said Elder Scrolls V is powered by a new engine. “We can now confirm that the TES V: Skyrim engine is all-new. And it looks fantastic,” Bethesda community man Nick Breckon tweeted. “It’s a new graphics/gameplay engine built internally. We’ll have more details down the road.”

UK broadcasters follow BBC’s iPlayer, bringing on-demand content to PS3 this week.
UK PlayStation 3 owners will be able to watch the likes of Coronation Street and Hollyoaks on their consoles later this week, with commercial broadcasters ITV and Channel 4 set to bring their on-demand services to Sony’s console, according to The Guardian.

Bethesda announces new role-playing title won’t use Gamebryo, the tech behind Fallout 3, New Vegas, and previous Scrolls.
Bethesda’s surprise announcement of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim at the 2010 Video Game Awards on Saturday was one of the hottest stories of the show. The title was dated for 11/11/11 and “Scrolls” became a worldwide trending topic on Twitter within minutes. Now, fans of the series have received another slice of news.
Bethesda’s community manager Nick Breckon announced via Twitter this weekend that Elder Scrolls V will use an “all new” engine.
Previous series entries Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, as well as newer titles Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas used the Gamebryo engine. Fans of the series will painfully recall hiccups associated with the engine, most notably New Vegas’ spinning head and assorted other issues.
