Publisher concerned about lag, price.
EA has aired concerns about the pricing and usability of the new cloud gaming microconsole OnLive.
Speaking at the UBS Annual Media and Communications Conference in New York, CFO Eric Brown said, “As I understand it, OnLive costs you $10 to $15 a month, then you have to buy content on top of that. So if it’s $15 a month, you’re down $180 at the end of the year.
“That’s about the price of a discounted high definition console,” he continued. “And the library out there for the HD consoles is extensive.”

Oddboxx marks multiplatform debut for series’ Xbox-exclusive Munch’s Oddysee and Stranger’s Wrath; four-game collection being released on Steam with unspecified enhancements.
Oddworld Inhabitants games are about to get a little more common. The company has announced the Oddbox, a PC compilation of all four of its previously released games.
Set for release by the end of the year on Steam, the Oddboxx will include a pair of games previously released on the PC–Abe’s Oddysee and Abe’s Exoddus–as well as the developer’s two original Xbox exclusives, Munch’s Oddysee and Stranger’s Wrath. The package will also include “a few new additions and enhancements,” though Oddworld Inhabitants hasn’t indicated just what those will be. Despite the name, the Oddboxx is not planned to see a retail release.
The Oddboxx will mark the first multiplatform launch for Stranger’s Wrath, but the first- and third-person shooter was already headed to new territory. In September, developer Just Add Water announced that it was working on an updated version of the game for the PlayStation 3, complete with support for the Move motion-sensing controller. That project is set for release around Easter of next year.
The Oddworld series was first launched in 1997 and is best known for its juvenile sense of humor, socially conscious themes, and platforming gameplay. Abe’s Oddysee and Abe’s Exoddus were released on the PlayStation and PC, and in 2000, the studio signed a deal with Microsoft to publish titles exclusively for the Xbox. Oddworld produced Munch’s Oddysee as a launch title, but the partnership with the console maker dissolved before Stranger’s Wrath was finished. Electronic Arts picked the game up in 2004 as part of its EA Partners program and launched it the next year, but Oddworld Inhabitants confirmed its withdrawal from game development soon thereafter.

The Wall Street Journal reports game-streaming service will also launch video offerings next year via subscription, “other” price models.
Last week, OnLive announced its $10-per-month PlayPack, which will grant subscribers unlimited access to a library of 40 titles via the online game-streaming service. This week, the startup’s CEO, Steve Perlman, told the
Wall Street Journal that his company is planning to offer a similar arrangement next year for movies.Speaking to the Journal, Perlman said that OnLive would offer movies and video via a subscription model and “other pricing schemes.” Though the company did not specify which schemes it might use, a clue can be gleaned from the pricing of its game offerings. Currently, the company offers three-day and five-day passes to single games, with prices ranging from $6 to $9. Full PlayPasses for a la carte games–the equivalent of a sale–vary from $4 to $50 and allow unlimited play of the game.
Perlman cited his concern about the increasingly rapid rise of Netflix–which has gone from more than 5 million to 15 million users in just three and a half years–as a reason for getting into the video business. “I think ‘concerned’ is a gross understatement,” said Perlman. “There’s a snowball effect. At some point they [Netflix] have so much content, if you want to get your stuff distributed you have to go with them.”
OnLive’s disclosure comes a week after Reuters reported that Microsoft was in talks with cable providers and channels to turn the
Xbox 360 into a cable box of sorts. That console, as well as the Wii and PlayStation 3, currently supports Netflix video streaming with native applications.Read and Post Comments | Get the full article at GameSpot
