Who are the Ghost People?
Fallout: New Vegas creator Obsidian has revealed the first details of Xbox 360-exclusive add-on Dead Money.
It’s set in the Sierra Madre, a casino that froze in time following the nuclear war that precedes the Fallout videogames, senior designer Chris Avellone revealed in the Bethesda Newsletter.
“The Sierra Madre faded from the history books, only occasionally being seen in posters across the wastes, until it took on mythic ghost story status… a supposed ‘City of Gold’ in the Mojave Wasteland where all the treasures of the Old World were rumoured to be held,” Avellone said.

Migrating community to lose online stats.
Why is Microsoft closing the Halo Wars forums and getting rid of the game’s online stat tracking? So that Halo Wars can move under the Halo Waypoint umbrella.
From 15th December, game chatter will be resurrected on Waypoint’s better moderated and better supported website.
Microsoft realises that losing online stat tracking “will be rough on a lot of you”, but said the decision to close the Halo Wars website wasn’t made “lightly”.

GT5 is–finally–coming out in Australia this week.
The eyes of the gaming community are on Gran Turismo 5 this week to see if years of production have delivered a game that justifies the long wait. In the racing title’s defense, the spec sheet is fairly big, boasting 71 different tracks, more than 1000 cars, and a feature that the fans have been pleading for: damage modeling. Branching out from traditional car manufacturers, Polyphony Digital has also managed to license vehicles from NASCAR, the World Rally Championship, and Super GT for players to choose from. Sadly though, there are no V8 Supercars amongst the list. With copies of Gran Turismo 5 already in the back rooms of retailers around Australia, it’s safe to finally say that the game will definitely be out in the wild this Thursday.
Next up is the release of Warren Spector’s latest game, Epic Mickey. Epic Mickey sees the usually happy-go-lucky mouse show off a little of his darker side for the first time. Releasing exclusively on the Wii, Spector has trawled through the Disney archives for inspiration and created a bleak world populated by forgotten Disney characters.
Other titles worth mentioning this week include Michael Jackson The Experience, TRON: Evolution, and Splatterhouse.

Australian Christian Lobby site urges readers to write to politicians and say no to the introduction of an adult classification for video games in Australia.
A website run by the Australian Christian Lobby is urging the public to “take a stand” against the introduction of an R18+ classification for video games in Australia.
The R18+ for games section on the Make A Stand site states that “the last thing our community needs is more explicit violence and sex”, outlining the results of the recent public consultation and the need to “take action” before the upcoming Standing Committee of Attorneys-General meeting (SCAG) on December 10. According to the site, the introduction of R18+ would mean that violent and sexually explicit content would find its way into the hands of children.
To stop this, Make A Stand proposes that the government “tightens up” the MA15+ rating to ensure games are not incorrectly classified into this category. The example used to illustrate this latter point is a video detailing the “No Russian” mission from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and a strip club scene from Grand Theft Auto IV showing two female strippers simulating sexual acts. The site fails to describe the context of either game, and does not make mention that players have the option of skipping the “No Russian” level or could play through without shooting civilians, or that players do not have to visit a strip club any any point during Grand Theft Auto IV unless they choose to.
The site then lists a study titled “Longer you play, the more hostile you feel: examination of first person shooter video games and aggression during video game play” by Bartlett, CP et al in 2007 as way to demonstrate the point that “there is strong community concern about the impact of violent video games on children’s development. Many games force the child to identify with the aggressor and children are rewarded for immoral conduct and violent behavior. Research shows that increased playing of violent first person shooter games can significantly increase aggression.”
The site urges readers to write to their state or territory Attorney-General asking him or her not to support the introduction of R18+ for games. The automated form provided at the end of the page requires readers to fill in their name, address and other details before the email is sent off to Federal Minister for Home Affairs, Brendan O’Connor, as well as the Federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland and respective state and territory Attorneys-General according to the postcode input into the form. The automated message also includes a message box, which is left blank. Instead, Make A Stand encourages readers to fill the message with points against R18+ for games. According to the site, 4,238 emails have already been sent.
The site also provides a list of recent mainstream media articles about the topic of R18+ for games, but seems to only include those in which R18+ is opposed, not supported. Make A Stand also takes issue with topics such as euthanasia, abortion and keeping scripture in schools, with separate pages dedicated to each of these issues and the same automated email forms. Readers are also encouraged to donate money to Make A Stand.
Classification ministers will meet on December 10 in Canberra to discuss R18+ for games. For more on the issue, visit GameSpot AU’s previous coverage.

New release slate led by oft-delayed PS3 racing title, Nintendo’s Wii gorilla revival installment; Raving Rabbids: Travel in Time, Michael Jackson The Experience, Undead Nightmare Pack also out.
This week’s new release slate isn’t quite a cornucopia of blockbusters, but it does include two hotly hyped exclusives.
Championing the week is the release of Gran Turismo 5, the long-awaited, oft-delayed PlayStation 3 racing simulator from Polyphony Digital. GT5 will feature close to 1,000 vehicles on more than 70 tracks in 20-plus locations. With a massive budget of $60 million, it is also an official licensee of several major racing circuits, such as NASCAR and the World Rally Championship. A sample of the PlayStation 3 exclusive, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, was released in April 2008, garnering decent reviews.
Gran Turismo 5 was originally unveiled for the PlayStation 3 back in 2006. Since then, it has faced numerous delays, missing its first shipping date back in March of this year when its release was put on indefinite hold, before later being delayed again past its November 2 release date.
Another prominent system exclusive due out this week is Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Nintendo Wii. The title was developed by Retro Studios, the outfit behind the Metroid Prime series. The 2D platformer sees Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong return to action with many of the DKC series’ familiar trappings, such as collecting bananas, racing mine carts, and being shot out of barrels.
The Wii-exclusives don’t stop there. Also due out this week is Raving Rabbids: Travel in Time. From Ubisoft, the zany title follows the neurotic, misshapen rabbitlike creatures as they use a time washing machine to go back in time and alter history to their liking.
The King of Pop will once again hold court this week as Michael Jackson The Experience makes its debut. While the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the title won’t ship until 2011, the Wii, DS, and PSP versions are out on Tuesday. The title displays the “breadth and depth” of Michael Jackson, with players dancing and singing along to some of his most famous songs. Those picking up the Wii version of the title will earn one of Jackson’s famous props: a facsimile of his iconic studded white glove. The glove will be bundled with copies of the game for a limited time.
Gamers looking to fight the undead can pick up the Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare Collection at retail this week. The content bundle will arrive in stores November 23, giving those who don’t own Red Dead Redemption an opportunity to play the game’s add-ons without needing the original disc. The package will include all four of the previously released downloadable content packs: Undead Nightmare; Outlaws to the End; Legends and Killers; and Liars and Cheats. The retail collection will also include all previously released multiplayer free roam modes and will sell for $30.
Game Republic’s Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom also hits the PS3 and Xbox 360 this week. The game focuses on cooperation between two lead characters; one of them is a roguish youth who returns to his homeland after its population is decimated by spectral warriors controlled by a “dark force.” Once said youth arrives in the kingdom, he teams up with Majin, a horned creature with a mysterious past and the ability to evolve throughout the game. Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom’s gameplay has players directly control the youth, who in turn can give the AI-controlled Maijin orders to fight off enemies and overcome obstacles.
For further details on the week’s games, visit GameSpot’s New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later this week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

Dancing and racing games lead regional releases, with Michael Jackson game and Polyphony Digital’s long-awaited title heading to stores.
It’s been a long, long time coming, but Sony’s hotly anticipated racing simulator–Gran Turismo 5–is finally ready to zoom onto PlayStation 3s this week. This console exclusive was first unveiled to the world in 2005, and during its time in production, it has reportedly racked up a US$60 million budget. But developer Polyphony Digital is aiming to have all that time and money pay off for patient gamers, packing the game with more than 1,000 cars, a horde of racing modes (including Road, Rally, NASCAR, Drift, Kart, and more), a track maker, and plenty more. Gran Turismo is scheduled for release this Wednesday, November 24.
It’s not all about hardcore racing action this week, though, with music fans catered for with the release of Ubisoft’s Michael Jackson The Experience. This “performance-based” game features 27 of the King of Pop’s biggest hits and is set for release on November 23.
