CEO John Riccitiello says plan to reestablish footing in FPS market is on track with Crysis 2 and Bulletstorm–but that he’s “very excited” about another unannounced title.
Today, Electronic Arts reported its earnings for the quarter ending December 31, 2010–and may have revealed the existence of a new first-person shooter in the process. As part of the report, the company revealed that its latest FPS, Medal of Honor, has shipped over 5 million units to date.
The figure marks the latest milestone in EA’s effort to claim the FPS genre crown, which has rested squarely on Activision’s head for the past several years, thanks to the Call of Duty franchise. EA CEO John Riccitiello referenced that struggle, saying his company did much better in calendar year 2010 than in calendar year 2009 with Medal of Honor and Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
Riccitiello went on to say he expects EA to do even better in the FPS genre in 2011. Besides the fact the two aforementioned games are still selling, the publisher also has two high-profile shooters it is releasing through its EA Partners program: Bulletstorm, due out February 22, and Crysis 2, due out March 22.
After congratulating respective developers Epic Games and Crytek, Riccitiello then said EA is also prepping a “very exciting” FPS that the company is “not announcing yet.” What exactly the shooter may be is unclear, but it definitely due before year’s end.
One possible suspect is the Insomniac Games multiplatform title that was announced last May. Though not indentified as a first-person shooter, it is coming from the studio behind the Resistance series, one of the most acclaimed FPS series on the PlayStation 3.
